What you have to do when you hit any animal

Animal may look friendly and innocent, but every year 10,500 people are sent to the hospital and 250 people are killed in animal related accidents. The large animals like deer not only can cause wide physical harm, but also large damage to your vehicles.

These collapses are not always preventable, but here are some tips for what to do after a collision with a deer or any other animal

  • Pull over to the side of the road
  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • If you exit the automobile, remain on the side of the road – out of traffic
  • Keep yourself calm
  • Avoid contact with the deer – it may still be breathing and may harm you.
  • Call 911 and ask them for help, particularly if the animal is jamming the road
  • Set up road flares if you have them in your emergency kit
  • Contact your insurance policy provider
  • If there is property damage or wound, complete an accident report for insurance purposes.
  • Contact your near auto body shop for towing service.
  • Take photographs of the sight and any damages.
  • Record the contact info of any eyewitnesses and write down their information
